During the period before Christmas (generally during the four weeks before Christmas), there is an unparalleled Christmas atmosphere in Austria. Each city has its own market, made up of decorated and decorated wooden stalls: in every corner there are lights, local handicrafts, traditional music, culinary delicacies, Christmas balls, sweets and spices that create a typically Christmas atmosphere. The gardens, houses, clubs and shops are completely decorated with Christmas decorations. There are also numerous spaces and Christmas events dedicated to children (Children’s Christmas in Austria).

Among the Christmas markets in Austria, in addition to the large markets in the main cities of the country such as Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Linz and Innsbruck, the Christmas markets are very interesting and evocative and take place in small historic Austrian cities such as Lienz, Imst, Hall in Tirol, Kufstein (Tyrol); Gmunden, Wels, Steyr (Upper Austria); Feldkirch (Vorarlberg); Sankt Veit an der Glan (Carinthia); Rust (Burgerland) or in the famous pilgrimage center of Mariazell.

The Austrian Tyrol, a land a short distance from the Italian border of the Brenner Pass, has an important Christmas tradition. In addition to the wonderful snow-capped mountains, the numerous Christmas markets that are held in the historic centers of some of the most beautiful cities and towns in the region.

The most important Christmas Markets in Tyrol are those held in Innsbruck, the capital and most important city of the region, in Hall in Tirol, in Seefeld, in the historic center of Imst, all centers a short distance from Innsbruck and easily visited in day, the markets of Lienz, in East Tyrol, and of Kitzbühel, the famous ski resort in the Austrian Alps, are also very beautiful.
