CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRIA
In Vienna, in the town hall and precisely in the Volkshalle room, the laboratory of baby Jesus is set up, where children can free their imagination by making gifts in terracotta, glass and paper with their own hands, and also try their hand at expert cooks by making themselves typical sweets of the place. Innsbruck Christmas Markets: Usually during the advent period Innsbruck becomes a magical place for children to dream, there are houses along Kiebachgasse and Köhleplatz where the most famous fairy tales are represented. A very nice curiosity is to see the famous Rapunzel in one of the famous medieval houses throw down the long blonde braid from the window or to see the famous Giants wandering around waiting for the children in their alley to play some nice trick. During the parade of San Nicola, for the first Sunday of Advent, San Nicola with beautiful angels next to him goes around the city starting from the church of San Nicola concluding at the Cathedral stopping among the children playing with them. St. Nicholas entertains the children by giving them tasty Tyrolean sweets and playing with them. Then follows the Procession of the Krampus, a show of the frightening Krampus and St. Nicholas in the main square. Usually during the last Sunday of Advent, another show not to be missed is the Christmas Procession, in which the famous shepherds called “Christkind”, accompanied by angels and sheep, cross the city carrying their gifts. In the Marktplatz Christmas market there are attractions such as the carousel, and the petting zoo.
In Kitzbühel, children will have the opportunity to go on pony rides, they will also find the carousels, and the characters and tales of fairy tales. In Schwaz, Tyrol, there will be puppet shows and the enchanted forest for children on weekends.
In the town of Kufstein, located in Tyrol near the border with Bavaria, the local market usually has a rich special program for children with Christmas stories, fairy tales, ponies, a train and a nostalgic carousel, while inside the castle for the little ones you will find Santa’s fabulous workshop and a bakery.
In the Salzburgerland, in Grossarl, there are usually numerous attractions for children such as the live crib, the baker’s workshop, Santa Claus’s post office. On Lake Wolfgang, in the village of Strobl, which transforms into a large nativity scene, the children will be amazed by the giant nativity scene with live animals and a large floating Christmas comet.
In the Hohensalzburg Fortress in Salzburg, which can be reached via a funicular, children will have fun making straw stars, ice flowers, angels, and many other objects. While in the courtyard of Hellbrunn Palace children can take a ride in a reindeer sleigh.
In Graz, Styria, in the Old Baby Jesus market in the Franciscan quarter, children will be able to admire the nativity scene with living sheep. Also in Graz there is a special Children’s Advent Market (Kinder-Advent am Kapistran-Pieller-Platz). Market entirely dedicated to children, where there is a Ferris wheel and a carousel, and lots of toys.
In Styria, in Leoben in the Christmas Village on the Town Hall Square, children usually have at their disposal Santa Claus’ post office, a bakery with sweets, a Ferris wheel, a toy train and lots of games to have fun with. In Schladming it will be possible to ride ponies or bake, the post office of the Bambin Gesù is also located in the village.
In Carinthia, in Velden am Wörther See, children are looked after with special care here they will usually find the animal zoo, a bakery where they can learn how to make and bake Christmas biscuits and sweets, it is also possible to ride on pony horses. A colorful little train will take young and old around the town. Even in Villach, children will find a Christmas train waiting for them and an ice skating rink will be set up for the older ones.
In Sankt Pölten (St. Pöltner Christkindlmarkt), in Lower Austria not far from Vienna, there is usually the children’s dream farm. Finally, in the Christmas Market of the Schloss Hof Castle, also in Lower Austria, you will find the living nativity scene, the craft workshop for children.
In Bregenz in Vorarlbeg, children will find puppet shows, a nostalgic carousel, the magical forest of stars, and the ponies waiting for them. In Feldkirch, a medieval town in Vorarlberg, there are carousels, the Marzipan House (Lebkuchenhaus) and a living nativity scene.
