Saarbrücken is the capital of Saarland, and is located close to the border with France, it is a city that originated as a small town during the late Roman Empire, then developed as a castle during the Middle Ages. Today the city is famous for its Baroque palaces, the work of the famous architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel, they overlook the three main and most beautiful squares of the city, the Schlossplatz, the Ludwigsplatz and the St. Johanner Markt. Today’s Saarbrücken was born in 1909 with the merger of the Baroque city of Saarbrücken and the merchant city of St. Johann. A few kilometers from Saarbrücken there is a particular structure, declared a world heritage site by UNESCO, the Völklinger Hütte steelworks, the most important and mammoth (600,000 m2) example of a building of this type in the world, which has now become a museum, a theme park, and an art and culture center.
