Maribor is the second city of Slovenia, known during the Habsburg Empire with the German name of Marburg (Marburg an der Drau), the city is located a few tens of kilometers from the border with Austria and about 60 km south of Graz .
Even in Maribor, as in the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, the Christmas Market is a tradition that reflects Maribor’s bond with Austria-Hungary, of which the city was a part until the end of the First World War.
MARIBOR CHRISTMAS MARKETS
In Maribor during the Christmas period there are usually two Christmas markets, the traditional Slovenian fair dedicated to St. Nicholas and the classic Christmas market.
1) Maribor Christmas Market (Praznični sejem na stojnicah – Praznični Čarobni). The market which is made up of over 30 stalls takes place in the squares and streets (Gosposka ulica, Grajski trg, dvorišče Vetrinjskega dvora, Trg Leona Štuklja) of the wonderful old town of Maribor where the main historic buildings of Maribor are located, including the town hall Renaissance, the Baroque monument against the plague, the church of St. Louis (Alojzijeva cerkev) and numerous old buildings.
2) St. Nicholas Fair (Miklavžev sejem). Traditional Slovenian fair held in Svobode trg and Grajski trg squares, both in the heart of the old city. This market celebrates the feast of St. Nicholas, a traditional Slovenian holiday.
