Ancient city of Roman foundation, the Romans called it Durovernum Cantiacorum, Canterbury became famous in the twelfth century as a place of pilgrimage. The city, which lies just 60 kilometers from London, is still partially surrounded by medieval walls with a Norman castle, and has its greatest appeal in the beautiful Gothic cathedral, built between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, and today’s world headquarters of the Anglican church. The Cathedral of Canterbury with the ruins of the St Augustine’s Abbey and the church of St. Martin are part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
