Gdansk – a city located on the shores of the Baltic Sea – is the most important seaport of Poland, its strategic location at the mouth of the Vistula River has always allowed it to control the trade of the interior of Poland and become, since the Middle Ages, the country’s most important port, crossroads of a commercial network. In the fourteenth century Gdansk became part of the Hanseatic League. Until the end of the eighteenth century Gdansk was the largest city in Poland.
The city now has a beautiful old town full of interesting houses and buildings that date back to the Hanseatic League, partly rebuilt because of damage suffered by the city during the Second World War. The most beautiful buildings are located along the pedestrian streets Ulica Długa and Długi Targ. Among the attractions to see there are also the old city gates (Brama Wyżynna, Złota Brama, Zielona Brama), the Basilica of Saint Mary (Bazylika Mariacka) of the fourteenth century, the town hall (Ratusz Głównego Miasta), the Dwór Artusa, an ancient meeting place of merchants, dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
