The climate of Canyon de Chelly: when to go

This post is also available in: Deutsch

The Canyon de Chelly National Monument is located on a plateau at a height that varies between 1,700 and 2,100 meters. The climate of the Canyon de Chelly is a semi-desert climate with harsh and sometimes snowy winters. The springs are cool and windy, the winds can sometimes cause sandstorms that reduce visibility.

Summer is the hot and dry season, but sometimes the climate can undergo sudden changes, this happens especially in the autumn months. The months between July and October are the rainiest, however, the rain falls rarely and in the form of short thunderstorms. The average amount of rainfall in a year is around 230 mm, but given the extreme dryness of the climate of the Canyon de Chelly, rainfall is rarely a problem.

In the summer months the heat is particularly high, but the altitude, which exceeds 1,600 meters, greatly mitigates the temperatures. Average maximum temperatures vary between 33 ° C in July and 6 ° C in January, while average minimum temperatures vary between -9 ° C in January and 15 ° C in July.
