The Portuguese climate is a relatively rainy Mediterranean type due to the presence of the Atlantic ocean. The rains are more frequent in autumn and winter. The climate of Portugal varies significantly from one region to another, influenced by altitude, latitude and proximity to the sea, which guarantees mild winters, as in particular in the Algarve.
In the northern part of Portugal oceanic influences are more present. In this area the climate becomes almost oceanic, rather cold in winter, a period in which even snow sometimes falls. The southern part of the country, i.e. the regions of the Algarve and Alentejo are very hot areas in summer. Here the climate is Mediterranean subtropical, very dry and hot inland, milder along the coast.
In the Douro, Minho and Trás-os-Montes regions, therefore in the northern part of Portugal, the climate is generally colder than in the rest of the country. Especially in Trás-os-Montes, winters are more severe, but the temperatures of this region are still mild when compared to the rest of Europe.
Summers are hot and dry, especially in the inland areas (Trás-os-Montes in the north-east and Alentejo) and in the Algarve, which receives very little rain in summer, although the cooling sea breezes mitigate the sense of warmth. The spring and summer months are sunny and the temperatures are very high in July and August.
Thanks to the influence of the sea, temperatures tend to be more bearable along the coast, even in autumn there can be sunny and warm days. The rainiest period is the months from November to March.
Lisbon has a warm climate, with sunny springs and summers. In summer, temperatures frequently reach 30ºC. The winters are humid and windy, the average winter temperatures are around 10ºC.
WHEN TO GO TO PORTUGAL
The best time to travel to Portugal are the spring months between April and June and the autumn months of September and October. The summer months are very hot, but they are excellent for those who want to stay on the Algarve beaches.
