The island of Chiloe is located in the temperate oceanic zone of Chile. The climate of the island of Chiloe is characterized primarily by a cool, humid and rainy climate for most of the year. The temperatures, on the other hand, do not undergo large daily and seasonal variations. For example in the town of Ancud, located along the western coast of the island, the average daily temperatures vary between 15 ° C in January (warmest month) and 7.5 ° C in July (coldest month). Also in Ancud, the average maximum temperatures reach 17.8 ° C in January and February and then drop to 9.4 ° C in July. The average minimum temperatures reach 10.9 ° C in January and finally drop to 5.2 ° C in July.
A VERY RAINY CLIMATE
The western side of the island, the one facing the Pacific Ocean, is more rainy and wild. In this area of the island there are beautiful rain forests and inhabited centers are scarce. Precipitation in this area also exceeds 3,000 mm per year. In the city of Ancud which is located in the far north along the western coast, the average annual rainfall shows values of 2,540 mm.
The east coast of the island, the one facing the gulfs of Ancud and Corcovado. Which is located on the side facing the inland coast of Chile, it is warmer and drier. For example in the town of Castro, located along the east coast of Chiloe, the average annual rainfall reaches values of 1,830 mm.
We can therefore say that in principle, apart from the difference in precipitation based on the position relative to the ocean and the coastal mountains, the rains are a constant in the climate of the island of Chiloe. The most conspicuous precipitations are, however, in the autumn and winter months, between May and August, when in Ancud there are monthly averages that vary between 360 mm (June) and 270 mm (August), with averages of 20-21 rainy days monthly. The driest months are the summer months, between December and March, when average monthly rainfall varies between 107 mm (February) and 130 mm (March and December). In the driest months, the rainy days are on average between 11 and 14 per month. The city of Ancud has an annual average of 200 rainy days.
The sea water around the island of Chiloe is cold throughout the year, it varies between 10.4 ° C in August and 14.5 ° C in January.
WHEN TO GO TO CHILOE ISLAND?
The best time to travel to the Chilean island of Chiloe is during the summer months, between December and March. In this period the temperatures reach the highest values, which however remain always very mild. In this period the precipitations are instead in their minimum period. It is in fact a relatively dry season even if on average there are still between 11 and 14 rainy days per month even in this period.
