La Chapada Diamantina is a National Park created in 1985, which is located about 450 km from the city of Salvador in the state of Bahia in the north-east of Brazil. The Chapada Diamantina National Park (Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina) is a mountainous region located in the central part of the state of Bahia. Here are the two highest mountains in the state of Bahia. The Pico do Barbado (2,033 meters), the highest mountain in the whole of the Brazilian northeast, and the Pico das Almas (1,958 meters). Chapada Diamantina is made up of 152,000 hectares of mountains, rivers, waterfalls and caves, and is equivalent to double the surface area of Switzerland.

A SURPRISING TERRITORY

The coexistence of the semi-arid sertão ecosystem (or Caatinga) which borders the park, the green tabular mountains and the world of underground water and caves is truly amazing. So called by the miners, who in the past came here in search of diamonds. Chapada Diamantina is now a destination for adventurous tourists who visit it both to walk along the paths and to explore the numerous and fascinating caves, such as those of Pratinha, Lapa Doce and Gruta Azul. But also to admire the spectacular mountains, such as the surprising Morro do Pai Inácio, and to visit places such as the Marimbus Pantanal and swim in the mountain waterfalls.

The best place to stay to visit the park is the town of Lençóis. At the beginning of the 19th century, huge diamond veins were discovered in the Chapada. Thanks to this, Lençóis became at that time the third largest city in the northeastern state of Bahia. Today, the population of the town is just 4,000 inhabitants. But tourism is coming and the city is very pleasant to visit.
