The city of Florence one of the most important tourist destinations in the world. It is also among the top three Italian tourist destinations together with Rome and Venice. But despite this, absurdly, it does not have a large international airport, but only a small city airport served by flights with some European cities but without intercontinental flights.
The runway of the airport is in fact small in size and prevents large modern planes from landing. The current runway is only 1,750 meters long and does not allow large planes to land. In recent years there has been talk of a possible new run parallel to the Firenze-Mare (A11) motorway which should reach a length of at least 2,400 meters.
Florence airport is the Amerigo Vespucci airport commonly known by the name of Florence-Peretola airport, from the name of the location where the airport is located. The property is located in the north-western part of the city of Florence near the beginning of the Firenze-Mare highway in the municipality of Sesto Fiorentino. Florence airport is currently the smaller of the two airports in Tuscany (the other is Pisa).
FLIGHTS BETWEEN FLORENCE AND OTHER ITALIAN AIRPORTS
Florence airport is connected by flights with several Italian cities. There are Alitalia flights with the Rome-Fiumicino airport. The company that has the most connections with the Florence airport is the Spanish low cost airline Vueling which has included Florence among its main bases.
FLIGHTS BETWEEN FLORENCE AND EUROPEAN AIRPORTS
Many more are flights to Florence from other European cities. Also in this kind of connections the Spanish low cost airline Vueling plays the lion’s share. In fact, it frequently connects Florence with Barcelona (and from here with a change of plane with all the places in Spain including the Canary Islands).
Many other airlines fly between Florence and the main European destinations. Among these to Germany we find Lufthansa has flights to Frankfurt (Frankfurt). The German city of Munich (Munich) is served by Air Dolomiti flights.
Among other major European capitals, Air France has flights between Florence and Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport. While Austrian Airlines has seasonal flights between Florence and Vienna. British Airways has flights to London Airport (London-City), and seasonal flights to other UK airports. Brussels Airlines has seasonal flights to the Belgian capital Brussels. The Dutch airline KML has flights between Florence and Amsterdam. Switzerland is connected to Florence by Swiss International Air Lines flights.
PARKING LOTS
As far as car parks are concerned, there are two types of car parks, the P1 car park dedicated to short parking and the P2 car park dedicated to long parking.
CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE AIRPORT AND FLORENCE
The airport is connected to the city of Florence with frequent ATAF buses that connect the airport every half hour to the Florence-Santa Maria Novella railway station, which is located in the historic center of the city. Taxis that leave the airport have a flat rate of 20 Euros for a ride between the airport and the city center. The airport is connected directly by the new TramVia line in Florence. There are also bus services that connect Florence airport with the cities of Prato, Pistoia, Montecatini Terme and Pisa.
