HOW TO GET TO GREENLAND: FLIGHTS AND AIRPORTS

The best way to get to Greenland is by plane. On Greenland there are three international airports served by airliners. There are flights from Iceland (Air Iceland has flights from Reykjavik to Kulusuk and Narsarsuaq) and Denmark (Air Greenland has flights from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq with connections to all Greenland locations).

FLIGHTS TO GREENLAND

Greenland’s main airports are Kangerlussuaq Airport (SFJ) and Narsarsuaq Airport (UAK). Flight time from Reykjavik to Kulusuk and Narsarsuaq is approximately two hours. Flight time from Copenhagen is 4 or 5 hours.

The only flights to Greenland leave from Copenhagen and Reykjavik airports.

Air Greenland has flights from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq. Then there are seasonal flights from Reykjavík-Keflavík to Nuuk. All other Greenland airports are reachable from these airports.

Air Iceland connects with seasonal flights only in the summer period the Reykjavik-city airport with the Greenland airports of: Ilulissat, Nerlerit Inaat, Kulusuk, Narsarsuaq, Nuuk.

National Transport: Internal air connections are ensured by Air Greenland (formerly Grønlandsfly). Air Greenland is the Greenlandic airline and operates a large percentage of passenger transport in Greenland by air and helicopters. Helicopters mainly connect cities in the south of the country, as well as cities in the north and east and small settlements.

HOW TO GET TO GREENLAND: FERRIES

International Transport: There are no maritime connections between Greenland and Iceland, Denmark and Canada. However, many cruise lines include Greenland in their itineraries. According to these itineraries it is possible to start the journey from Iceland or to board, for example, in Kangerlussuaq.

National Transport: In Greenland there are no roads or trains connecting the cities, so all transport takes place by plane or by ship. Between May and January, navigation services are active along the western coast, served by the ships of the shipping company KNI-Pilersuisoq. A passenger ship of the Arctic Umiaq Line operates a regular service between Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and Ilulissat in northern Greenland in the period from April to December.
