HOW TO GET TO ATHENS: FLIGHTS AND AIRPORT
Athens Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH)) is the most important airport in Greece. Here most of the flights from abroad land, and from here the connections to the islands of the Hellenic archipelagos leave. Other important airports are those of Thessaloniki in Macedonia, the airport of Heraklion (HER) in the island of Crete, the airport of Rhodes (RHO) in the Dodecanese, and in the archipelago of the Cyclades islands the airports of Mykonos and Santorini. However, many other islands are equipped with airports, and all are connected by flights at least to Athens airport. The main Greek airlines are Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines.
FERRIES TO ATHENS
To get to Athens the ferry is one of the most used means. Modern ferry ships that also make the car transport service connect some Italian ports located on the Adriatic Sea with Greece (Igoumenitsa, Patras and Corfu). These include those of Brindisi and Bari in Puglia, Ancona in the Marche, Venice in Veneto and Trieste in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
The time taken by the ferries for the crossing between Brindisi and Patras is 18 hours. While between Brindisi and Igoumenitsa located on the coast of Epirus, the ferries take about 9 hours. The island of Corfu can be reached in 8 hours.
The shipping companies that make the crossing are the Minoan (Ancona, Trieste), the Anek (Venice, Ancona), the Superfast (Ancona, Bari), the Endeavor (Brindisi), the Blue Star (Bari, Ancona), and the Agoudimos (Brindisi, Bari).
TRAINS FOR ATHENS
Rather complex to arrive by train in Greece unless you cross the Adriatic on board a ferry. In fact, the entire overland journey involves the complex crossing of the entire Balkan peninsula.
CAR FOR ATHENS
For those who decide to arrive in Athens by car, it is convenient to use the Italian motorway network to Puglia. And from here take one of the modern ferry ships that make the connections between Brindisi and Bari with the Greek port of Patra. There are also connections between Venice and Ancona and Patras. Once you arrive in Patras, through the E65 you can reach Athens in just over 200 km.
