The climate of Belgium is temperate maritime which means that it is largely influenced by air masses coming from the Atlantic Ocean. The Belgian climate is markedly variable, with frequent and rapid movements of air masses. Along the coast has a mild and moist, this is the least rainy area of the country.
A VERY VARIABLE CLIMATE INFLUENCED BY THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
In the interior, Belgium has a continental climate with frequent and widespread rainfall, the cliomate is Atlantic type, with cold winters because of the wind from the Baltic, cool summers and precipitation evenly distributed throughout the year. The summer season lasts on average from April to October.
The average annual temperature is about 9°C, the average temperature of January drop well below zero in several places, while those of July does not exceed 19°C. Precipitation, on average around 800 mm per year, with higher values in inland areas.
COLD WINTERS AND MILD SUMMERS
In the interior of the country there are marked variations in temperature, the higher the south-eastern districts, have hot summers alternate with very cold winters. The good season usually occurs from April to October and during the winter months snow is common. The country average annual temperature is 8°C, in Brussels, the average temperature is 10°C, ranging from 3°C in January to 18°C in July. Average annual rainfall is between 700 and 1000 mm.
The winters are wet and cool with frequent fogs, the summers are fairly mild. The regional differences in climate are determined by the distance from the sea and height above sea level. Further inland, maritime influences become weaker, and the climate becomes more continental, characterized by greater seasonal temperature variations.
The Ardennes region, the highest and farthest from the sea, is also the coldest region. In winter, we have approximately 129 days of frost, snow fell for 30 to 35 days, and in January the average minimum temperatures are lower than elsewhere. Because of the topography, the Ardennes have also the highest rainfall of Belgium. On the contrary, the Flemish region generally enjoys higher temperatures throughout the year.
WHEN TO GO TO BELGIUM
The best time for a trip to Belgium are the spring and summer months, when the days are longer and the weather is mild.
