Tanzania is located just south of the equator, but the equatorial climate affects only small areas at the northern end of the country. Most of Tanzania is mainly affected by a tropical climate with two seasons clearly differentiated according to the monsoon rains.
Tanzania’s climate is mainly influenced by two factors: the presence of the Indian ocean which causes monsoon rains and the presence of highlands which characterize most of the country’s territory.
THE PRECIPITATIONS
Along the coast of Tanzania, the rains fall between November and May, while the dry season occurs between June and October, on average about 1,100 mm of precipitation per year fall in the Dar es Salaam region, while on the island of Zanzibar they fall about 1,400 mm of rain per year.
In the highlands of the interior the rains decrease considerably, in these areas the rainy season is reduced to the months between November and April, in central Tanzania there are average annual rainfall values around 600 mm, these values tend to increase approaching the area of large lakes up to values around 900 / 1,000 mm per year.
THE TEMPERATURES
Temperatures are stable throughout the year and seasonal variations are minimal, but are affected by differences in altitude. Along the coast the maximum average temperatures vary between 33 ° C and 28 ° C, while the average minimum temperatures vary between 22 ° C and 25 ° C. In the highlands of the interior, temperatures are several degrees lower.
The sea water temperature along the coasts of Tanzania and in Zanzibar varies between 25 ° C and 29 ° C.
