The city of Linz has some attractions to visit in its interesting historical center where there are baroque and renaissance buildings. Among the most beautiful buildings to visit are the Bishop’s Residence (Bischofshof), the Landhaus, seat of the regional parliament of Upper Austria, and the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus).

In the city center there is an ancient fortress of medieval origin, the Linzer Schloss, founded in 799, but modernized in 1477 at the behest of Frederick III of the Holy Roman Empire (Friedrich III). The castle is now home to the Upper Austria Museum (Schlossmuseum Linz), which exhibits archaeological objects, weapons and paintings.

Among the churches worth mentioning is the church of St. Martin (Sankt Martins), the oldest Austrian church, dated back to 799. The old baroque cathedral (Ignatiuskirche) was designed by Pietro Francesco Carlone, and was built between 1669 and 1678. The New Cathedral, (Mariendom), built between 1855 and 1924, is the largest in Austria. Inside it can accommodate up to 20,000 people, note the very high bell tower which reaches 134 meters in height.
