Praslin, with an area of 44 sq km, is the second largest island in the Seychelles. This island is located 40 km north-west of Mahé. It can be reached from Mahé with only 15 minutes by air flight, or 3 hours by boat. Most of Praslin is covered in tropical forest.
The island has 5,000 inhabitants, and most of the inhabitants live in one of the two villages: Baie Ste. Anne in the east and Grand Anse in the west. At Baie Ste. Anne there is also a small port, from which you can take a ferry to the nearby island of La Digue. The ferry takes only 30 minutes for the crossing between Praslin and La Digue.
The beaches of the island are among the most beautiful beaches in all the Seychelles. Among the best beaches are those of Anse Lazio, Anse Georgette, Anse Kerlan and Anse Volbert or Côte d’Or.
THE ISLAND OF THE VALLÉE DE MAI
The island of Praslin will be among the most interesting for those who love nature. In fact, do not miss a visit to the Vallée de Mai, an enchanting natural reserve. The famous “coco de mer”, with its suggestive forms, grows in abundance here, it is a palm tree that has the largest seed in the plant kingdom.
In 1983, the Vallée de Mai was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site with these words: “in the heart of the small island of Praslin, the reserve has preserved the vestiges of a natural palm forest almost in its original state”. The valley is a tropical Eden rich in vegetation where the imposing coco de mer palm trees stand out.
The island of Praslin is served by an airport, the Praslin Island Airport, which is located in the northwestern part of the island in front of Grande Anse. Praslin is connected by daily Air Seychelles flights with the main Seychelles airport, Mahé (Seychelles International Airport).
