The climate of Angola: when to go to Angola

This post is also available in: Deutsch 日本語 Français Italiano Português Español

Angola has a remarkable variety of climatic zones. The north of the country has a hot and humid tropical climate. Going south the climate of Angola becomes drier until it becomes desert in the far south towards the border with Namibia. The central highland region has a temperate tropical climate, rainy between October and March.

THE RAINY SEASON

In northern Angola, the rains fall intensely between September and May. While in the inland highlands the rainy season lasts from November to April, and the dry and cold season from May to October. In the southern region, the rains occur between December and March. In general it rains more in the north of the country, but at all latitudes it is more intense inland than along the coast and increases with altitude.

The rains are abundant in the northern and central highlands (average between 1,250 and 1,750 mm) and decreased along the coastal plains (average between 250 and 1,000 mm), however in the southern part of the country, south of Benguela the average annual rainfall is less than 100 mm. The Benguela current makes the coastal regions of Angola, arid or semi-arid, the average annual rainfall along the coast is only 50 mm in Namibe, and 340 mm in Luanda.

TEMPERATURES

Temperatures fluctuate much less than rain and generally decreases with increasing distance from the equator, from the coast and altitude. The annual average temperatures along the north coast is around 26°C, while in the interior highlands annual average is 19°C. The coldest months are July and August.

The climate of the capital Luanda is moderately tropical, with a fresh and dry season between June and September, and a hot and humid season between October and May. Luanda receives an average of about 340 mm of rain a year. The sea water temperature varies between 22 ° C of the coldest months, and reaches 29 ° C in March.
