This post is also available in: Deutsch Français Italiano Português Español

The climate of Algeria varies considerably from north to south. The coastal area has a Mediterranean climate, while the highlands south of the coast have hot summers and cold winters with little rain. In large parts of the country there are significant changes between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Further south, the Sahara desert begins with even more extreme differences in temperatures between day and night.

THE CLIMATE OF THE NORTH OF ALGERIA

The north of Algeria has a temperate climate, which varies at the altitude. The coast has a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters. With average maximum winter temperatures of 15 ° C and average minimum winter temperatures of 9 ° C, while in summer the average maximum temperatures are 28 ° C and the average minimum temperatures of 21 ° C.

The rains are quite abundant. They vary according to the areas between 1.000 mm in the eastern areas (Grande Kabylia, Piccola Kabylia and Djebel Edough) and 400 mm in the western areas (Piana di Chelif, Aurès and Amour mountains).

In the spring months, particularly in April, a warm wind sometimes blows from the desert, the sirocco that transports large quantities of sand from the desert, causing intense sand storms and a sharp rise in temperature.
