San Francisco tourist attractions: what to see

San Francisco is located on the California coast at the end of the homonymous peninsula. This is a spectacular peninsula surrounded on three sides by the sea. The area was discovered in 1769 by a group of Spanish explorers, led by Don Gaspar de Portolà. Seven years later, in 1776 the Spaniards founded a fort at the Golden Gate, and then a mission, called Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores) which today is one of the tourist attractions of the city.

San Francisco is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the United States. The bay where the city is located is spectacular. The historic center is bordered by Market Street to the south. In the center is the financial district. While in Union Square there are the main shops and hotels. Other meeting places are Fisherman’s Wharf, Russian Hill, Lombard Street, North Beach. Chinatown is also located near the city center.

WHAT SEE

Among the main tourist attractions of San Francisco are the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, which was once a famous prison. Then we find Pier 39 on Fisherman’s Wharf. This is a tourist area with shops, arcades, fish restaurants, cafés, and a colony of sea lions. The famous Lombard Street. Finally we can mention the classic cable cars of San Francisco. Other interesting attractions are the Hakone Japanese Tea Gardens, located in Golden Gate Park. Then the aforementioned Chinatown, residence of the largest Chinese community outside Asia.

Among the tourist attractions of San Francisco there are also several interesting museums, with valuable and renowned art collections. These include the City Museum, a museum dedicated to the history of the city. The Museum of Modern Art, dedicated to 20th and contemporary art. The Palace of the Legion of Honor, which houses European works. The De Young Museum and the Asian Art Museum, an anthropological museum with non-European art. The Palace of Fine Arts. The science museum: the Exploratorium. The California Academy of Sciences, a natural history museum with the Morrison Planetarium and the Steinhart Aquarium.
