HISTORY

In the seventeenth century the town was the starting point of a network of commercial routes that united the Persian Gulf with the Mediterranean. In 1792 the British established their commercial branch in Kuwait. Kuwait became a sheikhdom and in the 19th century a British protectorate. This remained until 1961, when it became an independent emirate.

In August 1990, Iraqi forces invaded the country. Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein annexed the country as nineteenth province of Iraq. After a series of failed diplomatic negotiations, the United States led a coalition to drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. This war became known as the Gulf War.
